10 October 1851 There is a report of an earlier crime by a John Cutts in the Coventry Standard for Friday 10 October 1851 p.4 col.4 which reads: Thomas Welch, John Cutts, William Callaghan, James Waters, William Haines, and Joseph Barton, were brought up by William Burdett, one of the Park Garden Policemen, on a charge of having, last night, entered the nursery in the occupation of Mr Ogden, and stole therefrom a quantity of apples. Welch, Waters, and Haines pleaded guilty; Barton was admitted evidence against Cutts and Callaghan, and they were convicted and sentenced to three months imprisonment with hard labour in the house of correction; Welch, Waters, and Haines , one month each with hard labour.
24 September 1852 There is a brief report of a crime committed by a John Cutts – not a common surname – but the date of the trial is after the date given in the Saltley Admissions Register. The report in the Coventry Standard Friday 24 Sep 1852 p.3 col.3 states: COUNTY HALL, COVENTRY Sept. 17 … Three boys, named John Cutts, Joseph Thompson, and William Thomson, pleaded guilty to a charge of loitering about the premises of the London and North Western Railway company, especially at that part from Cheylesmore to the flight of steps into the station yard. Many complaints had been made of their conduct, especially by females, who had been much annoyed by their blackguard language. – Mr Morris, in addressing these youths, said he understood there were several of their companions now in Court, and he hoped they would hear what he said. It was the determination of the Magistrates to put down such practices, by visiting with severe penalties every one who might be found guilty of similar conduct. In the present case the defendants would each be fined 20s, and 10s costs, and in default be committed for three weeks, with hard labour, in the House of Correction, on an allowance of bread and water only. – They were committed. This is the sixth time Cutts has been imprisoned.
