7 October 1854 in the Minute Book of the Reformatory it is recorded that Dwyer [boy 38] and Dowd, two boys who were lately taken to London by Mr Ellis, with the hope of their getting to sea, have absconded, and it is the impression of the Committee that they have gone to a sea port.
2 January 1855 it is recorded in the minute Book that Dowd, one of the boys who went away with a view to getting out to sea has been brought back to the school.
