12 July 1875 There is a report of the crime in the Staffordshire Sentinel Saturday 12 July 1875 p.3 col.5: ALLEGED FELONY AT TUNSTALL.-A youth named- Charles Hambleton, of Silverdale, was charged with stealing a silver and chain, valued at £7 8s., the property of George Gardner, Podmore-street, Tunstall. - Susannah Gardner, wife of prosecutor, said that a short time ago, the prisoner came to her house and took lodgings there. On the inst., she left the house for a short time, and on her return missed the watch and chain, which she had left at home. Prisoner was in the house during her absence. She had adopted the youth as her son, and had behaved to him as a mother. - Evidence was given to show that, on the 9th inst., prisoner offered the watch for sale at Congleton.-P.S. Dalton said he apprehended the prisoner at Congleton.-lt was stated that the youth was wanted for stealing a watch at Madeley.-Prisoner, who said he was sixteen years old, but looked considerably older, was remanded for a week.
