2 February 1878 There is a short report of the offence in the Tamworth Herald Saturday 2 February 1878 p.3 col.6: A VILE EDUCATION. - Frederick Carthy, a boy 14 years of age, of Alrewas, was charged with stealing a pair of leggings and a brass ornament, value 4s, the property of William Pratt, farm servant, of Orgreave, near Yoxall.- The case having been proved by prosecutor and P.C. Small, it was stated that prisoner had a wretched home, had never been to school in his life, and that his brothers were convicted thieves. -Sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment and 3 years in a reformatory.
