Notes:

27 April 1880 An offence committed before he was sent to Saltley is reported in the Wolverhampton Express and Star Tuesday 27 April 1880 p.3 col.3: YOUNG THIEVES. - David Hughes, Joseph Kimberley, Jonathan Carter, Albert Gallear,.. and William Everitt, all young lads of Portobello, were convicted for stealing some boots and stockings several shops in Willenhall, Bilston, and Horsley-fields. Some of the articles were pledged at the shop of Mr. Belcher, pawnbroker, Willenhall. - The prisoners were fined 2s. 6d. and costs in two cases, and in addition Carter and Everitt, the two principal offenders, were ordered to be whipped with a birch rod the former twelve times and Everitt six times. A pair of the stolen boots pledged at Mr. Belcher's shop were ordered to be returned to the owner without any allowance to the pawnbroker for the money he had advanced.

16 November 1885 He seems to have returned to a life of crime aftr he left Saltley as there are several reports in newspapers. One is in the Wolverhampton Express and Star Monday 16 November 1885 p.3 col.4: WILLENHALL. A BAD TRIO. To-day (Monday), at this court, before the Rev. G. H. Fisher and Alderman W. Edwards, three youths, named George Brindley (16), key filer, Walsall-street; William Beech (17), key stamper, John-street; and Jonathan Carter (16), tailor, High-street, Portobello, were charged with stealing a pair of slippers, value 2s., from the shop window of Thomas Phillips, general dealer, Union-street, on the 12th inst. Previous convictions are recorded against all the prisoners, who were now committed for trial at the Sessions. - Brindley and Beech were further charged with doing wilful damage to the prison cell windows and closet to the extent of 10s. Inspector Cook stated that the behaviour of these two prisoners when in custody was of a most violent nature, every window in the cell being smashed by them, and the closet broken, whilst their language was of the foulest description. Committed for two months' hard labour.
