2 February 1882 The offence that sent him to Saltley is reported in the Birmingham Daily Post Thursday 2 February 1882 p.5 col.5: ASTON POLICE COURT. - At this Court, yesterday, before Messrs. J. D. Goodman and F. S. Bolton, David Addicot (13), butcher, and Seth Aston (8), both of Ward Street, Birmingham, were charged' with stealing nine scrubbing brushes, value 2s. 6d., from the shop of James Ingram, of Clifford Street, Aston, on the 29th ult. The prisoners were seen shortly after the. theft with the brushes in their possession. They were before the magistrates about three weeks ago on another charge, when Addicot was punished and Aston discharged with a caution. Aston's mother now stated that her son had been regularly to school since being previously before the magistrates and produced the following certificate signed by the head mistress: "Board school, Summer Lane, January 30, 1882. Seth Aston has attended this school for the last fortnight." The prisoners now pleaded guilty, and Aston was ordered to receive six strokes with the birch rod, and Addicot was committed to prison for twenty-one days, and afterwards to be detained in a reformatory school for five years.
