5 March 1853 A brief report of crime is reported in the Birmingham Journal of Saturday 5 March 1853 p.7 col.3, It reads: AN INCORRIGIBLE YOUNGSTER. – A juvenile, named Edward Mott, was brought up on a charge of stealing a piece of cheese from the shop of Mrs Walford, of Dale End. The offence was committed about seven o’clock on Tuesday, and was fully substantiated. The Bench observed that had been already convicted three times, and as he had been both imprisoned and whipped, and every other means used to reclaim him had failed, they should now send him before the Recorder for trial, and he was accordingly committed to the Sessions.
