There is a report of the crime (which errs in the name of the reformatory he was sent to) in the Bristol Mercury Wednesday 3 March 1880 p.6 col.3: POPULARITY OF THE FORMIDABLE. James Dickens, aged 11, was charged with stealing 3lb. of old newspapers, value 6d,, the property of his father, a shopkeeper in Bread-street. Prosecutor said the lad, who had been at the court before for similar conduct, sold these papers on Monday and spent the money, besides his school money, 3d. His son had repeatedly said he would do anything to get on board the Formidable. The youngster now expressed a wish to go to Park-row Industrial School, Supt, Turner said the boy had been in custody three times this year, and was once birched. Sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment and five years at Kingswood Reformatory.
