Warwickshire Parish registers missing from the International Genealogical Index, and some alternative sources

Parish Registers (or parts of Parish Registers) that are believed to be missing from the IGI are listed here (this list is derived, in part, from Hugh Wallis's list of IGI batch numbers). Coverage of baptisms and marriages in the International Geneaological Index (IGI) varies considerably from parish to parish, and even more so from county to county. Warwickshire is quite well covered, compared with some other counties, but even so for Baptism before 1754, 43% of parishes have some years missing from the IGI, while 5% are completely missing. For Marriages in the same period, 51% of parishes have some years missing, and 10% are completely missing. For the period 1754 to 1812, 20% of parishes have some Baptisms missing, and 8% are missing completely, while 23% of parishes have some Marriages missing, and 14% have all Marriages missing. After 1814 the situation is better, but even so 16% of parishes have some Marriages missing and 12% have all marriages missing. Some parishes have just a few years missing, while others have extensive periods without entries.

What this means, as is well-known, is that failure to find a Baptism or Marriage may be because the period concerned is not in the IGI. Even worse, success in finding a Baptism or Marriage (perhaps the only one in Warwickshire in the IGI) does not necessarily mean that one has found the correct one: another, unextracted, entry may be lurking in a register not covered.

It is hoped that this table may help by indicating missing years, and some alternative sources of information.

This table lists Registers up to 1837. bap means baptism (christening), m marriage, bur burial. GLS in this table means that the material is on the Gloucestershire fiche, WOR in the Worcestershire fiche, not Warwickshire. If there is no entry against a Parish, it is believed that the coverage in the IGI is complete, but you are reminded to check the register for yourself. There are a substantial number of transcripts and indexes at the Warwickshire County Record Office, and those that cover some of these gaps are listed here. In addition, several of the volumes of the Phillimore Marriage register series cover Warwickshire parishes, although some were printed as part of the Gloucestershire or Worcestershire series.
